I don’t know if anyone else finds these posts interesting, but I’ve long been fascinated by “day in the life” posts. I love seeing a glimpse into the real, everyday routines and events that make up someone’s average day, and it’s so fun to see and learn snippets that I didn’t know already. I thought it might be fun to share what my typical weekday looks like – and I would also love to get a glimpse into what your day looks like, too. So please feel free to share in the comments what comprises your regular, average day!
Wakeup! I’m pretty lucky that I don’t have to wake up any earlier than 7:00 (plus, it’s still dark out!). I aim to get 8 – 9 hours of sleep every night, and I also never hit the snooze button.
7:00 – 8:00
Shower, get ready for work (dry hair, curl or straighten hair, makeup, get dressed – I love dressing up for work!), publish a blog post, catch up on social media, and have some quiet time + Jesus Calling to get my day started on the right note.
Head out the door to work… I drive about a mile to the metro (which what the subway is called in Washington, DC). Then I hop on the metro for about 40 minutes into the heart of the city. During my commute, I am always reading a book (and it’s almost always completely packed full of people)! I get off of the metro downtown (near the White House and heart of the city) and walk about five blocks to my office. Lately, it’s been the coldest, windiest walks ever!
9:00 – 5:30
Work, work, work! While I plan weddings on the side, I’ve been at my current full-time job for almost 2.5 years. I work in an education/literacy/mentoring non-profit for Title 1 elementary school students in Washington, DC. I oversee programs at several elementary schools around the city (and manage staff at each of those schools), so I visit at least one elementary school a day. The students and mentors I see every day are so sweet & energetic! I regularly trek around the city throughout my work day, though it’s balanced out by quite a bit of meetings in the office, recruiting mentors at pretty awesome organizations/businesses around the city, and emailing away & project management like crazy. I usually take a quick (30 minutes) lunch break around 1:30 or 2:00 each day, and I almost always pack a (fairly healthy) lunch and read while eating.
5:30 – 9:30 or 10:00ish
Off work! It totally depends on the week or the day, and my plans after work are routinely different. I’m a huge planner, so my nights are almost always planned weeks in advance (not sure that’s always a good thing!). I am definitely a social person and extrovert, and seeing friends and sharing in community is a definite priority of mine in the evenings! A few times a week, I’m typically meeting a friend or group of friends for happy hour (DC is known for its abundance of happy hours!) or dinner in the city. I always have my small group/Bible study on Tuesday nights (love this!). I also spend my regular weekdays doing some combination of the following: book club or articles club, meeting with my brides, doing wedding and calligraphy work at home, having girlfriends over for Bachelor nights, or volunteering. This month, I’ve been particularly good about cooking dinner at home, but I’d say I cooked dinner at home maybe 2/7 nights of the week in 2014 (and possibly 1/7 nights!).
9:30 or 10:00
Start winding down! I love ending the day on a calm and quiet note, plus I love curling up in my cozy bed. I typically start wrapping up the night by making sure I’m caught up on blog posts and outstanding wedding planning emails/to-do tasks, plus making sure I have lunch packed for the next day. I then do my quiet time (gratitude journal, prayer requests, and Bible reading) for a little bit, followed by a few minutes of reading until I can’t keep my eyes open any longer. I generally turn out the lights around 10:30, excited and prepared for the next day!
